김진화 - 보이지 않는 세계로의 여행

예술가의 특권은 무엇일까? 혹자는 고통스럽지만 은밀한 즐거움을 느끼는 창조활동이라고 하고, 혹자는 금지된 것에 대한 자유로운 접근이라고도 말한다. 다양한 의견들이 있을 수 있겠지만 뭐니뭐니해도 무한한 상상력의 자유로운 표현 아닐까? 예술가는 무한한 상상력으로 잠을 자지 않고도 꿈을 꾸는 사람이다. 존재하지만 감각적인 형태로는 존재하지 않는 생각이나 상상력의 산물은 예술가에 의해 이미지화된다. 보이는 것뿐만 아니라 보이지 않는 영역의 세계까지 표현해 내는 것이야 말로 예술가의 특권이 아닐까 싶다.

김진화의 작품을 보면 작가의 무한한 상상력이 동원된 추리소설이나 알쏭달쏭한 그림동화를 읽는 기분이 든다. 건축적 구조물이나 정방형의 무늬가 가득 찬 복잡한 배경에 동화 속에서 튀어나온 듯한 사람과 사물이 어지럽게 나열되어 있는 그녀의 작품은 퍼즐 맞추기나 수수께끼를 풀어가듯 온갖 생각과 지식을 총동원하게 만든다. 따라서 왠지 비밀스럽기도 하고 재미있기도 하지만 솔직히 어렵다. 

김진화는 별자리, 사물이나 건축물의 형태, 정방형, 낙서와 같은 드로잉에 관심이 많다. 그녀에게 별자리는 곧 꿈과 이상을 의미한다. 별은 어두운 밤하늘의 작은 빛이지만 어두우면 어두울수록 더 잘 보이고 더욱 반짝거린다. 사는 것이 힘들면 힘들수록, 현실과 이상의 간극이 크면 클수록 더욱 간절하듯이...  또한 사물이나 건축물의 형태나 정방형에 대한 관심은 그녀의 성격과 관계가 깊다. 어려서부터 항상 뭔가를 해야만 한다는 강박관념 같은 게 있어서 항상 어떤 구조물을 보면 모서리와 모서리를 연결해 가상의 선을 그어본다거나 칸을 만들어보는 습관이 있었다. 지금도 그녀는 생각이 많고 꿈이 많고 논리적이며 부지런한 사람이다. 또한 시와 음악을 좋아하고 책읽기가 취미이다. 어쩌면 우리가 화가하면 떠올리는 모습보다는 모범생이라는 표현이 어울리는 사람이다. 

최근 김진화는 시각적으로 보여지는 사물이나 건축물의 형태와 구조에서 인간내면의 정신적‧ 심리적인 측면과의 연관성을 찾아내는데 열중하고 있다. 특히 책과 음악, 여행 등을 통해 얻은 영감이나 감동과 사색 혹은 인간내면의 다양한 심리상태 즉 불안, 집착, 욕망, 이상과 꿈, 갈등 등 눈에 보이지 않는 세계의 시각화에 관심을 갖고, 사물과 건축구조의 공간적 재구성 위에 신화적․역사적․문학적 알레고리를 끌어들여 시나 소설을 쓰듯 그림이야기를 만들어 낸다. 알레고리를 차용하는 근저에는 감성적이기보다는 이성적이고 논리정연하고, 동기와 이론적 체계를 중시하는 작가의 성향이 깔려있다. 작품 <상상적 추락>을 예로 들면 반복되는 원형계단에서 추락의 이미지를 발견해 내고, 말을 타고 추락하는 비너스와 새와 물컵 속의 물이 떨어지는 모습을 삽입하고 있다. 생명의 탄생이자 미의 탄생을 상징하는 비너스가 추락한다는 것은 근원적인 것의 추락을 의미하는 것으로 더 이상 앞으로 나아가지 못하고 꼼짝달싹하지 못한 채 모든 것이 흔들리는 상황을 암시한다. 이와 같이 김진화가 만들어낸 화면 안에는 사물의 구조가 가진 시각적 착각(환영)과 작가의 심리상태간의 절묘한 교차가 이루어지고, 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것 사이의 긴밀한 긴장감이 존재한다. 

김진화의 그림은 자신의 시각적 심리적 체험의 개별적 특성을 유형화하고 그것을 알레고리화하거나 상징화하기 때문에 비밀스럽고 주관적인 풍경처럼 보인다. 그러나 동시에 보편적 상징의미를 지닌 알레고리들을 제시하기 때문에 공통적이고 보편적 심리상태가 적용될만한 내러티브를 획득한다. 이밖에도 김진화의 작품은 몇 가지 이중적 성격을 지닌다. 계산되어진 일정한 질서와 반복적 이미지의 사물이나 건축구조물이 가진 기계적이고 건조한 특성 위에 내러티브를 지닌 신화나 정신분석학적 상징체계들이 도입됨으로써 김진화의 그림은 서사적 구조로 환치된다. 즉 그녀의 그림은 지적이고 직관적인 반면 감성적이고 무한한 상상력을 동원하게 한다. 또한 전통적(신화적․철학적․문학적) 기반을 지닌 알레고리와 작가가 만들어낸 상징적 이미지들이 혼재되어 있기 때문에 작가의 의도나 등장 이미지가 갖는 전통적 의미 이상의 해체적이고 다양한 열린구조로 해석이 가능하다. 

형식적인 면에서 여러 장의 판넬을 겹치는 방식이나 복잡한 구조물의 배경은 그림을 암호화하고 상징을 극대화하는 장치로 작용한다. 즉 겹쳐진 판넬 장치나 창문, 반복된 계단 등은 들여다보고 그 안으로 빨려들게 하는 요소가 되어 때로는 판타지의 세계로 끌어들이기도 하고 심리적‧정신적 내면의 세계 혹은 보이지 않은 세계로 안내하는 통로 역할을 한다.

내가 만난 그녀는 작은 체구로 온몸과 마음을 불살라 다소 힘들고 머리 아픈 작업을 하고 있는 듯 보였는데, 정작 스스로는 창작활동 자체를 그저 즐긴다고 말한다. 이 얼마나 대단한 경지인가 싶다. 김진화는 살아가야 할 날들 동안 보이지 않는 세계에 담겨있는 보물들을 하나씩 발견하여 그것들을 조형화시키고 싶다고 말한다. 조용히 진지한 자세로 작업에 몰두하고 있는 김진화를 보며 내성적이고 착실하고 이성적인 사람의 열정은 즉흥적이고 감성적이며 감정표현에 적극적인 사람의 열정보다 훨씬 더 뜨겁고 깊다는 생각을 해 본다. 

Journey of Invisible World

What is the privilege of artist? Some said it is a creative activity which is painful but feels a secret pleasure and other said it is a free approach to something forbidden. There may be various opinions; but I think it is a free expression of infinite imagination. Artist can dream without sleeping with infinite imagination. By-products of nonexistent idea or imagination in sensible from become image by artists. So expressing invisible world as well as visible one may be artist’s privilege.

Kim, Jin Hwa’s works make us feel reading a mystery story composed by writer’s infinite imagination or vague picture story. Achitectural structures or arrangement of people and objects from fairy tale in complex background filled with square patterns make us mobilize all kinds of ideas and knowledge like puzzle or riddle. So, her works are somewhat secret and interesting, but frankly difficult to understand.

Kim, jin Hwa has much concern in constellation, square and drawing like scribbling. Constellation means dream and ideal to her. Star is a small light in dark sky, but it is seen well and shines more as it is darker… Her interest in objects, architectural forms and square is closely related to her character. She has a long habit to draw imaginary lines or make a section by connecting edge and edge when she saw a structure and it was because she had a kind of obsession. Now she thinks hard, is logical and diligent. She also likes poem, music and books. She is like a model student rather than artist.

Kim, jin hwa is immersed in finding out an association with mental and psychological aspects of human beings from visual objects or architectural forms and structures. In particular, she has interest in the visualization of invisible world like the inspiration, emotion and thinking from books, music and journey or the various mental states including anxiety, attachment, desire, ideal, dream and conflict and makes a picture story like writing poem or novel by drawing mythological, historic and cultural allegory on the spatial recomposition of objects and architectural structures. Her borrowing of allegory is based on her disposition that gives priority to logical and rational motive and theoretical system rather than emotional. For instance, her work “imaginative Falling” discovers the image of fall from descending stairs repeatedly and inserts the scene that venus with wings and water in cup fall. The fall of venus symbolizing the birth of life and beauty means that of something essential and suggests the situation that everything is confusing not to advance further. There are delicate crossing between visual illusion that structure of an object has and artist’s mental state within the canvas made by Kim, jin hwa and close tension between visible and invisible things.

Kim, jin hwa’s painting look like secret and subjective landscape because she typifies individual characteristics of her own visual and psychological experiences and makes them allegory or symbol. But since she presents allegories having the meaning of universal symbol, she gets narrative that mental state is applicable. Besides, her works has some double character. Mythology or psychoanalytic symbol system are applied on calculated regular order, objects of repetitive image and mechanical and dry characteristics of architectural structures and then her paintings are replaced to epic structure. Her paintings are intellectual and intuitive, but mobilize emotional and infinite imagination. In addition, since her works are mixed with traditional(mythological, philosophical and literary) foundation and symbolic images made by artist, it can be interpreted as dismantled and various open structures beyond traditional meanings of artist’s intention or image.

Method of folding several panels and background of complex structures act as the devices of encoding the painting and maximizing the symbol. That is, folded panel device, window and repetitive stairs become the factor which make audience absorbing and looking into their inside and lead them to the world of fantasy or play the role of guiding mental and psychological world or invisible world.

She who I met has small physique and seems to struggle with hard works, but she said she enjoys creative working itself. She discovers treasure in invisible world one by while she is alive and wants to make them art form. I think that the passion of introspective, good and rational character is hotter and deeper than of those who are active and impromptu in expressing their own emotion.​
